DVD duplication is not too dissimilar from CD duplication, as a DVD is physically comparable. The diameter of a DVD is 120mm or 80mm, like a CD. However they are both different in terms of what a DVD and a CD can do, obviously this is mainly down to the time periods they were created. CD's were created in the 1970's whereas the DVD emerged in the 1990's. DVD's can store data including videos of a higher quality. Not only have that, but DVD's have a larger storage capability that is seven times bigger than a CD. For several years DVD's were digitally guarded to stop illegal DVD duplication in an effort to save the celluloid industry from piracy. It was common for DVDs to have an inbuilt encryption code that was known as CSS or 'Content Scrambling System.' Today some DVD players include a chip that is able to 'unlock' a DVD. However this is unable to create DVD duplication, just allows for the DVD to be viewed. Interestingly it took until 2001 for a sixteen year old male from Norway called Jon Johansen who created a software program that cracked the DVD CSS code. Previously believed to be an impenetrable code the new software by Johansen was named DeCSS, which allowed users to 'rip' a copy of the DVD's content on to their hard drive. In the past it was difficult for people that wanted to create different DVD duplication projects, a few years ago the prices of drives that copied DVD's were quite expensive. Even purchasing blank recordable DVD's was costly, with the average blank DVD costing more than a film DVD brought in a shop. Today that is not the case at all; DVD burning devices can be purchased for very little and software for free. Blank DVDs for duplication can even be purchased for as little as a pound a disc, even less if brought in bulk. Currently there are many ways for people to copy VHS to DVD, DVD to DVD, DVD to CD etc. The latest products on the market are dual-layered drives that are able to copy entire DVDs without compressing data to produce DVD duplication. However it is recommended if you need a bulk of DVD's copied that you get professionals to do your DVD duplication. There are many reputable companies that you can find online that will be able to create the highest quality copies of your DVD at a fast and competitively priced rate.
