Electronics City is a vast industrial complex in India, spanning more than 1.3 square kilometers in land area. A formidable collection of building and interconnecting roads, Electronics City straddles the neighboring villages of Konappana Agrahara and Doddathogur, and is located just outside Bangalore proper. Many of the more recognizable names in the IT industry have their headquarters here, attesting to the areas drawing power. Among the companies that have offices in the Electronics City are Wipro, Hewlett Packard, Patni Computer Systems, CGI, and Yokogawa Electric.
Electronics City was the dream project of R.K. Baliga, who served as the first Chairman of Karnataka Electronics as well as the Managing Director of its Keonics division. Electronics City was Baligas own vision an Indian "Silicone Valley", and it would definitely grow to become worthy of its appellation. Unfortunately, Baliga would not live to see his dream come to fruition, since he died in 1988.
After the passing of Baliga, much of the impetus in developing Electronics City into the outsourcing capital of the world that it is today lay in the liberalization efforts spearheaded by Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and Finance Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in the 1990s. It was then that Electronics City grew to the industrial giant that it is today.
In 1997, ELCIA or the Electronics City Industries Association took over much of the maintenance work of Electronics City, after being given the responsibility by Keonics. It was during this time that representatives from the different departments were fielded in order to address various governance and management concerns.
Electronics City is currently comprised of three phases, the aptly named Phase I, Phase II and Phase III. It was the development of Phase 2 that opened the door to more and more companies setting up shop in Electronics City. Unfortunately, this development has also caused traffic to and from Bangalore to increase considerably. In order to ease the traffic, construction work on an elevated road was started in late 2004. Initiated by the government, this road building project is only one sign of the continued viability of Electronics City for the future.
The building of the highway is actually quite timely, given the presence of many high profile industries in the area. Companies such as BOSCH, Convergys, Volvo, Audi, Toyota, Volkswagen, General Motors, and many others stand to greatly benefit from many other projects in Electronics City that are to be implemented in the near future.
