Why Other Liquids Spilled In Electronics Are Worse Than Water
by: jennaanderson It is so frustrating to have paid a lot of big bucks for the latest and greatest for some electronic or battery operated item and have it ruined because it got wet. Some of the things we use these days like cell phones, ipods, and blackberries can be hard enough to keep up with or prevent being stolen as it is, but you also have to keep them dry. It is tempting to take them with us into the bathroom or near a pool or other watery place and many times we do take them and they get wet. If they do not fall in and become immersed in water, there is always the possibility that they can get something spilled on them. You might have heard that just because some electronic items get wet that it does not always mean that it means they will never work again and this is true sometimes. However, this usually is only true when the liquid that wet them is water. This is because water can dry out inside an electronic item sometimes and leave the components just as they were before they were wet. When you spill other liquids like cola, juice, or coffee into the item, this will not go away so easily. The water in the liquid might dry out but, the sticky substances they also have in them like sugars, pulp, or other additives will remain. These can cause the components to stay sticky and they probably will not work at all unless they are cleaned. Many of those that have damaged an electronic like their cell phone by spilling cola or coffee on it, have tried to take the device apart and clean it themselves, but usually this is a big mistake. The components inside these devices are very sensitive to say the least and when they have already been compromised, it can be even easier to make them for sure to never work again. The best way to have any chance at all for saving the item is to take it to a professional repair person. Sometimes the company that you bought the device from will take it and try to repair it, but it is more than likely going to cost you. It is rare that a standard warranty will cover any damage that you caused yourself. Now, it you buy additional insurance for the item, you might have coverage for self inflicted damage. The only way you will know for sure it to call the company that you bought the item from and find out. They should be able to tell you how bad the damage might be and give you an estimate on repair if it is possible to fix it at all. If you spill water on any electronic item, try to give it several days to dry out before you attempt to turn it on. Once you try it and it is still wet, chances are you will fry the components inside and then it will likely be useless. A repair person that knows what they are always better than a frustrated owner who does not.
